The word Bonnroo, made popular by New Orleans’ Dr. John in his 1974 album Desitively Bonnaroo, means “a really good time”. Hence, this rockin’ arts and music concert called The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival no doubt makes for a really good time! It was also originally called Bonnaroo to honor the rich Louisiana music that inspired the organizer’s desire to provide a variety of live and quality music to music lovers. The first of these festivals took place in 2002, and immediately caught fire, selling out in about two weeks without any traditional marketing. Eventually comedy acts, as well as tents for artisan exhibits, dancing, watching cinematic features, clothing and food vendors etc. were added to the festival. And eventually a permanent stage in The Great Stage Park was installed specifically for Bonnaroo. Types of music played at Bonnaroo include mostly indy/alternative rock as well as country, bluegrass, jazz, Americana, folk, gospel, reggae, and electronica. Past notable acts include Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, Nine Inch Nails, The Dead, The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket, Jay-Z, The Flaming Lips, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Kanye West. This year notable acts include The Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Loretta Lynn, Dr. John and the Original Meters, Ray Lamontagne, Girl Talk, The Black Keys, Ratatat, Band of Skulls, Amos Lee and many more!
