One of the most successful artists of all time, Sir Elton John has delighted audiences and music-lovers with his fabulous singing, compositions and melodies on the piano. A somewhat sheltered childhood in Pinner, Middlesex, John’s love of elaborate performance and wild costumes came as a reaction to his restrictive childhood. He became interested in music and particularly rock and roll at a young age and later studied music at the Academy in central London. He became a pub-pianist in the 60’s and formed a band called Bluesology. He went to work as a songwriter for Liberty Records where he and Bernie Taupin (whom he still works with today) collaborated on music and lyrics. After their debut album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Taupin and John went on to release several albums in the 60’s and 70’s. “Your Song” became his first hit single as a singer. Throughout the 80’s, 90’s and in to the new millennium, Elton John has released several number one hits, composed for hit Broadway musicals as well as animated features, and famously sang his very famous hit “Candle in the Wind” at Princess Diana’s funeral. He’s won six Grammys, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked him as the most successful male solo artist on “The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists”. His latest studio album, The Union was released in October 2010.
