Gotye
Make way for this hot new Aussie-born artist, Wouter De Backer, better known as Gotye. A multi instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Gotye’s music has often been compared to Peter Gabriel and Sting. He’s released three studio albums, and has also sung in the Melbourne pop band The Basics. He’s won five ARIA Awards and received a nom for MTV EMA.
After the success of his album Like Drawing Blood, he released a new single Eyes Wide Open. He released the album Making Mirrors in August 2011. After releasing the single, Eyes Wide Open he released the song titled “Somebody That I Used To Know” which he recorded with New Zealand musician Kimbra and the single quickly moved up (with the help of the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Lily Allen) the charts peaking at number one in Australia, Belgium, the Dutch Megacharts and the UK.
On its first week of release, the album came in at number one on the ARIA Australian album chart, making Gotye the first Australian act to simultaneously hold both the number one single and album since 2007. The song went on to be an international success, charting in the top 20 in over 10 countries and reaching number one in six of them. It also charted in the US and Canada.
On 11 October 2011, it was announced that Gotye had been nominated for seven ARIA Awards. Due to the release date restrictions of the eligibility period, Making Mirrors could not be nominated, and the seven nominations all related to the single "Somebody That I Used to Know". Gotye ended up winning three ARIA Awards: Best Male Artist, Best Pop Release and Single of the Year for the song "Somebody That I Used to Know." Kimbra also won an ARIA for Best Female Artist.
