Shrek the musical is based on the book Shrek! By William Steig and the DreamWorks picture of the same name. The music is by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by David Lindsey-Abaire. The Broadway production opened in December 2008 and ran for over 12 months. The first North American tour began in the summer of 2010. The original cast included Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek, Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, Chester Gregory II as Donkey, John Tartaglia as Pinocchio, and Kecia Lewis-Evans as the Dragon. The story begins with a young ogre named Shrek who is sent out by his parents from his home in the swamp at the age of seventeen to go make his living. They warn him that because he is an ogre and not blessed with good looks, that everyone will hate him and he will not have a ‘happy ending’. He is happy living a quiet life until fairy tale creatures begin moving onto his land. When they explain that they cannot move because they have been exiled by order of the Kingdom of Duloc, he decides to go journey to see Lord Farquaad. Along the way he meets, of course, Donkey who insists upon tagging along. When he reaches Lord Farquaad, a deal is struck between the two that Farquaad will give Shrek his land back if Shrek agrees to rescue the Princess Fiona from a castle surrounded by lava and a fire-breathing dragon.
