Born in 1951 as Gordon Sumner in England, at a club wearing a yellow and black sweater he gained his nickname, Sting by a fellow jazz musician at the Phoenix Jazzman. Shortly after punk music swept England, Sting and friend Stewart Copeland began playing music and coined the band name The Police. While they earned a record deal in England specifically because of the song ‘Roxanne’, their music had no chart success due to their unconvincing veneer of punk, so they went to America. With a combo of new-wave toughness and reggae rhythms, playing in small venues in New York and Boston they slowly but surely began a small following. Momentum for the band increased with their debut album and hits like ‘Roxanne’, ‘Can’t Stand Losing You’ and ‘So Lonely’. The big break for Sting and the Police came when they returned to England and found that Roxanne had hit the charts. They finally went number one with ‘Message in a Bottle’ and ‘Walking on the Moon’. After many hits and tours, in 1984 the band split up and Sting went solo releasing his first solo-album in 1985 called ‘The Dream of the Blue Turtles’, which was a revelation. After many other albums and years, ‘Brand New Day’ proved to be his top hit in terms of record sales. In the 2000s, 2010 found Sting performing occasional live shows in places like Dubai and Venezuela. The main live activity of 2010 though was the 'Symphonicity' tour across North America in June and July and Europe in the fall, with the Royal Philaharmonic Concert Orchestra and a quintet consisting of Dominic Miller, David Cossin, Jo Lawry, Rhai Krija and Ira Coleman. An album of studio recorded tracks, 'Symphonicities', was released in July 2010 with a live CD/DVD recorded at Berlin's O2 World released in late November before the tour heads back to Europe in the summer of 2011 with dates conducted by Sarah Hicks.
