Globetrotters history dates back to 1926 when Abe Saperstein formed the team “Savoy Big Five”—that team would become The New York Harlem Globetrotters by 1930. The team is an exhibition team that combines practices from theatre, athleticism, and comedy. They have played in over 118 countries and during the course of their history have played in about 20,000 games!
While in the beginning they mostly started with a main focus being athleticism, every time they were in the lead in a game they would begin to clown around and entertain the audience. This became so frequent that they began to incorporate the comedy routines into their games and thus the focus of their playing was split between winning the game and entertaining the audience. Parts of their routine include juggling the basketballs, balancing and spinning balls on their fingertips and making unnecessarily difficult shots.
After losing two games, one in 1952 to Seattle University and one in 1962 to the Washington Generals, they only lost two more games in the next 38 years!
More recently, the team has been playing much more competitively with a very high winning percentage, in the high ninetieth percentile.
Many legendary players have been a part of the Globetrotters including: Hubert Ausbie, David Gaines, Jackie Jackson, Fred Neal, Louis Klotz, Curly Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, Marques Haynes, Meadowlark Lemon, and Reece Tatum. All of these men were not only fantastic basketball players, but their showmanship earned the team a wonderful reputation.
Recently they have announced to extend their ninth annual holiday tour of the U.S. military bases. Get your tickets to see your favorite guys in red, white and blue right here on Prominent Ticket Service!
