West Side Story

Inspired and modeled after Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story captivates audiences and pulls on heart-strings as two lovers who fight to stay together amidst the chaos and hatred that ensues between their social groups who attempt to drive them apart. Arthur Laurents wrote this American musical, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The musical score for West Side Story was written by Leonard Bernstein, and the famous choreography was created by Jerome Robbins, who also directed (not just choreographed) the first production of the musical in 1957. That performance marked Stephen Sondheim’s musical debut, and the production won a Tony award that year. It also inspired the film that was created in 1961. A national tour of the 2009 Broadway revival began in October 2010 at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. The cast features Kevin Harris as Tony and Ali Ewoldt as Maria. An Australian tour 2010–2011 is currently being performed in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and finally Adelaide. The cast features Josh Piterman as Tony, Julie Goodwin as Maria, Alinta Chidzey as Anita, Nigel Turner-Carrol as Bernardo and Rohan Browne as Riff. The production featured several Jets and Sharks who were said to have been only performed in the movie. Now Tony and Maria fall in love again while the Jets and the Sharks battle for control of the neighbourhood once again in the newest revival of the classic musical.
