A self-taught pianist and musician who began by playing recitals for his family in Greece, Yanni is now an accomplished and popular new age or “comtemporary instrumental” musician. He has acquired more than 35 platinum gold albums, has played for two million people in concert in 20 different countries, and is considered one of the top fundraisers in public television. His music can be recognized all over television commercials and broadcasts (i.e. the Olympic games). He studied at the University of Minnesota and received a degree in psychology, but started a music career following this. In college he met drummer Charlie Adams and John Tesh, and with them started a band in 1987 to promote his earliest albums Keys to Imagination, Out of Silence, and Chameleon Days. His popular album Dare to Dream was released in 1992, which gave him a Grammy nomination. One of his most famous tracks, “Aria” was featured on that album and can be heard in an award-winning British Airways commercial. He released several other popular albums in the 90’s such as Reflections of Passion, In Celebration Of Life, and In My Time (second Grammy nom.). His breakthrough commercial success came with his live album Yanni Live at the Acropolis where he played and recorded a live show at the Herod Atticus Theatre in Athens, Greece. The concert was broadcast on PBS, and it was so successful that it led to future spots on PBS. Yanni is one of the few western musicians to play at the Taj Mahal and at the Forbidden City in China. In 2000, he released his first studio album in seven years: If I Could Tell You. He toured and released album, Yanni Live! The Concert Event in 2006, and in 2008 he recorded Yanni Voices, and Disney Pearl Imprint released the album in 2009. This led to a tour that began in April of that year.
